The English word "religion" is derived from the Middle English "religioun" which came from the Old French "religion." It may have been originally derived from the Latin word "religo" which means "good faith," "ritual," and other similar meanings. Or it may have come from the Latin "religâre" which means "to tie fast," or "bind together."

Defining the word "religion" is fraught with difficulty. Many attempts have been made. Many people focus on a very narrow definition that matches their own religion, but few if any others.

The highly diverse schools of thought in the Christian world greatly vary on their concept of religion and how it is related with salvation, a core faith in Christianity. It will be very common for the major Christian groups or churches to readily claim authenticity of their particular group to be the true religion or church that has in one way or another, a relationship with The Lord Jesus Christ. Although these groups conflict with each other on matters of faith and doctrinal substance, there are certain disciplines that they share with commonality. For example, they all believe in God, in Yeshua-Christos as the Savior, on the Bible as God’s words, among many others. However, they do not share with uniformity their belief on those mentioned topics, and many more others.

Let us simplify the complexities of religion and answer the following topics:

  1. Define religion based on its ultimate purpose and inherent value.

  2. Did Lord Yeshua start or establish a religion where one must belong for him to attain salvation? What did He establish while He was still on earth?

  3. Why are there now countless variants of Christianity that conflict with each other on matters of faith and practices?

Although the etymological and cultural meaning of the word religion varies from different regions and groups, its ultimate purpose and inherent value are universal, and that is, for man’s enlightenment and ultimately salvation for his soul. The prophet Jeremiah summed up this fact:

(Jeremiah 6:16 NKJV in all verses unless otherwise noted)

16 Thus says the Lord:

“Stand in the ways and see,

And ask for the old paths, where the good way is,

And walk in it;

Then you will find rest for your souls.

But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

Here are certain points as to The Lord God’s instruction, and people’s response:

  1. Stand in the ways and see – meaning to observe and inquire among many religions

  2. ASK for the OLD paths – refers to the prophecies of the prophets of old

  3. Where the GOOD WAY is – the old paths or the prophecies will lead you to the good way

  4. WALK in it then you will find REST FOR YOUR SOULS – by staying on the good way one will receive salvation and eternal life

  5. They said, ‘we will not walk in it’ – this shows people’s refusal in obeying this instruction of God. Knowingly or unknowingly, people fail to follow these instructions. They are just like someone who took some medicines from the medicine cabinet without reading the labels and instructions first, but hopeful that those medicines he took will do him good.

God Himself, through His prophet, defines the ultimate purpose and inherent value of religion, that is, WALKING IN THE GOOD WAY. And for those who take the time to seek, search and inquire they will be rewarded with a rest meant for their souls or salvation and eternal life as promised.

If the true religion is the way instructed by God for man to find, then which is the way? Who is it? And how is it to walk in it?

(John 14:6-7)

“6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.””

The Lord Yeshua is the GOOD WAY, as well as the TRUTH and the LIFE. For one to be in Christ simply means he has to be in His truth also, and then he will have His life as well. To be in the truth of Christ means to be free from all teachings or basis of faith that conflict with His Word or teachings, as false teachings are lies that The Lord’s enemy, the devil, is planting around the world to deceive as many as he could.

How is it that Christ being the good way only proves the fact that He is the true religion?

(John 17:21)

“21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one”

The Lord Yeshua brings man to be in union with Himself and God! In man’s struggle to be in union with God, he needs nothing and no one else but The Lord Yeshua-Christos. And the people who are in Him being the true religion proves their connection and union with Him by doing His work based on love, His primary message to man:

(James 1:27)

27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

While it is very clear that Christ is the good way and the true religion that can bring man to be in union with Him and God, the devil was effective in countering this truth with his own version. As preached by many churches, starting with the Catholic Church at the end of the first century, there is now a need to be in the church supposedly established by Christ on earth for them to be received in the kingdom of heaven. The focus now is changed from being in Christ and God, as were the status of His true disciples, to being members of the church which is an earthly organization headed by men and purported vicars of Christ. And many churches fight over the claim of being Christ’s true church or earthly organization, e.g. Catholic Churches, Latter Day Saints, Jehovah’s Witness, Seventh Day Adventists, Iglesia ni Cristo (1914), and many more others.

While the Evangelical Churches and the rest of Christianity do not preach on the relevance of church membership for salvation, but rather on receiving Christ as one’s personal savior, the devil was still successful in making their faith based on false teachings and lies. All of these groups also rely on the judgmental teachings of Paul and the old commandments, thereby missing an opportunity to be completely enlightened with the Word of Christ alone. At the same time, almost all of them are misled by the doctrine of Trinity – a concept that is not only shrouded in mystery but is a complete exposé of the devils’ deceitfulness, and fully received by the majority of those who aim to follow Christ.

While two significant doctrines of Christ concern unity and truth, Christianity has always been fragmented from discord and confusion which led to the multiplication of varying groups and organizations, each one having a version of what they alleged as Christ’s truth which conflicts with the other groups. Why is that? It is because they are not yet freed by Christ, Himself being the truth that can set one free (John 8:31-32). They are still enslaved by lies and deceitful teachings fathered by the devil (John 8:44).

Who are freed by the truth, and what do they possess that could counter the devil’s deceitful teachings?

(John 8:31-32)

“31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.””

(1 John 2:20-21)

“20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.”

(John 15:15)

“15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.”

Anyone who abides in Christ’s Word (only) is a disciple who shall know the truth (John 8:31) and all things (1 John 2:20) about The Lord and His teachings. They will know about His truth and be freed by them (John 8:32) for Christ Himself will make it known to them, and in the process making them His friends (John 15:15). They are the ones who can put a STOP TO THE LIES that has so much infiltrated the community of Christ-believers.

As fact that is already established, The Lord Jesus did not come to form an organization or church to be the ‘true religion’. He started a spiritual revolution that tore down walls and barriers so that God’s will to save man will be fulfilled. He came to recruit for disciples who will be one with and in Him, people who will be entrusted and themselves enlightened with His truth who will live as freed man on earth, with a guaranteed residence in heaven to be rewarded at the appointed time. Part of His goal of saving people is making friends, as His true disciples would always prioritize His priorities, entrusting all of life’s cares unto His keeping. As disciples are enlightened with His truth, they will experience an intellectual and spiritual renaissance to know and master only the ways of His Master, Lord and King – Yeshua-Christos. Part of this experience are the signs of a true believer/follower/disciples (Mark 16:17-18), and their access to the promised blessings even on earth (Luke 18:28-30 / JohN

However, becoming a disciple of the Lord comes with a responsibility to recruit more disciples who will enjoy the same guaranteed benefits. As Christ is the one who makes those who believe His disciples, however He utilizes the existing ones to be His implementing arm and mouth piece in the world, that His light will continue to shine, and shine bright at will! Since giving the commission, His last words and task to His then disciples prior to His ascension, the work of MAKING DISCIPLES has not ceased. And His only requirement has not changed since - as long as someone is willing to receive Him as the TRUE RELIGION - being THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE; and is willing to be made a disciple. The Lord’s task of making disciples guaranteed the continuation of His presence and reign, that is in itself God’s will on earth as it is in heaven.

May everyone who reads this article heeds the task of The Lord Yeshua-Christos:

(Matthew 28:19-20)

“19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
