INC's Other Prophetical Claim Series

The Iglesia ni Cristo (1914) believes that their official registration with the government of the Philippines on July 27, 1914, is the beginning of the apocalyptic time ‘ends of the earth’, the beginning of the Seventh Seal of time as presented in the book of Revelation. They believe that the fact that their registration in the Philippines is concurrent with the start of the First World War only attests to their claim.

The INC1914 cites the prophecy of Isaiah that made mention of the phrase ‘ends of the earth’ in Isaiah 41:10 to be the appointed time for the reemergence of the true church established by The Lord Jesus. They explain the term ‘ends of the earth’ to be that when the end of the world is at its doors (Matthew 24:3, 33) based on the warning of The Lord Jesus Christ concerning the rumors of wars, pestilences and even natural disturbances (Matthew 24:6-8) that will happen prior to His return. They tie up these package of biblical prophecies with the prophecy of Revelation 7:2-3 pointing to their elder, Felix Y. Manalo, as the other angel in the prophecy who will lead in the sealing of God’s servant – at the beginning of the Seventh Seal.

Could 1914 be the beginning of the Seventh Seal as proven by the start of the First World War, thus the year 1914? Is the INC1914 correct in their understanding? How does Apostle John describe his vision of time and events when the Seventh Seal started?

(Revelation 8:1)

1 When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

When The Lamb or The Lord Jesus Christ opened the Seventh Seal there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Which is this silence referred by John that signals the beginning of the Seventh Seal? To arrive at a definite time frame, let us convert first the half an hour of silence in man’s time.

(2 Peter 3:8)

8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

According to Apostle Peter, one thousand human years is equivalent to only one day to The Lord. Therefore, to get the half hour in The Lord’s time we have to divide 1,000 man years by 24 by 2. That would be 20.83 or 20 years and 10 months! What ‘silence’ or peace time in man’s history lasted for almost 20 years and 10 months?

Let us try the peace time between the First and Second World Wars. The First World War ended on November 11, 1918 while the Second World War started on September 1, 1939. That peace in between those two World Wars lasted for 20 years, 9 months and 13 days. This is about half an hour to The Lord and matched with the description of John. Therefore, the biblical start of the Seventh Seal could be pinpointed to begin on November 11, 1918 and not July 27, 1914 as the INC1914 group has been claiming.

Note: That the silence in heaven for about half an hour is the peace time between the two World Wars is an official teaching of the INC1914 group.

Once again, the INC1914 is proven to have misunderstood some biblical facts. They even laid their core foundation on their claim that the year 1914 is the beginning of the Seventh Seal and was also the start of the time ‘ends of the earth, indeed a big blunder on their part.

(John 10:16)

16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

This verse is claimed by some religious groups to refer to them being the other sheep of The Lord Jesus Christ. The Latter Day Saints explain this verse to refer to the lost ten tribes of Israel who migrated to the American continent thousands of years ago.

Another notable claim to this statement of The Lord is that of the Iglesia ni Cristo (1914). They believe that they are the other sheep referred in John 10:16, and that the One Shepherd in this verse refers to Felix Y. Manalo. They connect this prophecy with the declaration of Apostle Peter regarding the people “who are afar off” (Acts 2:39) as them who belong to the reemerged Church of Christ from the year 1914. Is the INC1914 correct in their understanding of the ‘other sheep’ of Christ?

Who are the other sheep of The Lord Jesus-Christ?

(Matthew 15:24)

24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

The other sheep of The Christ that He needs to bring and gather is none other than 'the lost sheep of the house of Israel'. Why is there a need for The Savior to gather His other sheep? And how is it proven in prophecy that indeed the other sheep of The Christ belongs to God's nation of Israel? The prophet Jeremiah prophesied about the only people who were likened as the sheep of God:

(Jeremiah 50:17)

17 “Israel is like scattered sheep;

The lions have driven him away.

First the king of Assyria devoured him;

Now at last this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones.”

The prophet Jeremiah prophesied how Israel will be like 'scattered sheep' as a result of foreign invasions. How did God commission The Lord Jesus so that His scattered sheep will be gathered?

(Isaiah 49:5-6)

5 “And now the Lord says,

Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,

To bring Jacob back to Him,

So that Israel is gathered to Him[a]

(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord,

And My God shall be My strength),

6 Indeed He says,

‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant

To raise up the tribes of Jacob,

And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;

I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,

That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

The other sheep of The Lord (referred also as the lost sheep) are the preserved ones of Israel, and the prophesied Servant to gather and restore them is none other than The Christ Jesus. This specific responsibility is enclosed in His general mission of saving the world.

How else are the other sheep or preserved ones of Israel mentioned in prophecy? Another parallel prophecy of Isaiah gave this description:

(Isaiah 11:1, 11-12)

1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,

And a Branch shall grow out of his roots…

11 It shall come to pass in that day

That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time

To recover the remnant of His people who are left,

From Assyria and Egypt,

From Pathros and Cush,

From Elam and Shinar,

From Hamath and the islands of the sea.

12 He will set up a banner for the nations,

And will assemble the outcasts of Israel,

And gather together the dispersed of Judah

From the four corners of the earth.

The other sheep or preserved ones of Israel are the remnants, outcasts or dispersed of Israel and Judah from all around the world! And the one entrusted with this work of gathering them is the prophesied Rod and Branch from Jesse, The Lord Jesus Christ. If so, they are not from any Gentile people, and neither are they from any other country like the Philippines.

(Acts 2:38-39)

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

This verse has been erroneously taught by the INC1914 as referring to their specific group. They explain that the ones promised the Holy Spirit, and referred by Apostle Peter as to you, are the Jews, while those referred as their children are the Gentiles called in the first-century; and those ‘who are afar off’ referred to the INC1914 group. Could they be correct in their understanding of this apostolic confirmation?

In this declaration of Apostle Peter, who are the three groups of people promised the gift of The Holy Spirit. Let us categorize them as mentioned by Apostle Peter:

  1. To you – these are the Jews whom Peter was addressing in this instance

  2. To your children – they were the children of the Jews (and therefore, Jews also) who will also receive the Holy Spirit as mentioned in verse 17:

(Acts 2:17)

17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,

That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;

Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

Your young men shall see visions,

Your old men shall dream dreams.

3. Those who are afar off – they are still Jews who were made part of the mission of The Christ to gather who would come from far places. They are the Jews in diaspora as prophesied by Isaiah:

(Isaiah 11:1, 11-12)

1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,

And a Branch shall grow out of his roots…

11 It shall come to pass in that day

That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time

To recover the remnant of His people who are left,

From Assyria and Egypt,

From Pathros and Cush,

From Elam and Shinar,

From Hamath and the islands of the sea.

12 He will set up a banner for the nations,

And will assemble the outcasts of Israel,

And gather together the dispersed of Judah

From the four corners of the earth.

The three groups of people promised the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:39 are all Jews! And the apostles understand this as a fact that the primary mission of The Christ is to save first from His own people, God’s people of olden times, and then commission them to bring the same promised salvation to all the nations.

The INC1914 erred in understanding those mentioned as from ‘afar off’ to refer to them, vainly connecting their claim to this verse with the other prophecies like Isaiah 43:4-6, Zechariah 13:8-9 and John 10:16. Please read our separate articles concerning those mentioned prophecies and how they were also erroneously understood by this same group.

(Zechariah 13:8-9)

8 And it shall come to pass in all the land,”

Says the Lord,

“That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die,

But one–third shall be left in it:

9 I will bring the one–third through the fire,

Will refine them as silver is refined,

And test them as gold is tested.

They will call on My name,

And I will answer them.

I will say, ‘This is My people’;

And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”

This is yet another verse that is misunderstood and wrongly claimed by some ‘Christian’ groups, particularly the Iglesia ni Cristo (1914). They teach that the first and second thirds or parts that were cut-off were the Jewish Christians and the Gentile Christians in the first-century, referred by Apostle Peter as ‘to you’ and ‘to your children’ in Acts 2:39. The supposed reason for their being cut-off is that they were either killed or apostatized by the false prophets. Is that really what was prophesied by Zechariah?

For us to know who these people are, first we need to understand what is the reason God cut off the two groups of them in the land? Who are these people referred in the prophecy of Zechariah?

(Zechariah 13:7)

7 “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,

Against the Man who is My Companion,”

Says the Lord of hosts.

“Strike the Shepherd,

And the sheep will be scattered;

Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.

The prophesied Shepherd and Companion of God is none other than The Lord Jesus Christ. He was the One whom they will strike or kill, and thus God will scatter the sheep or the people of Israel (Jeremiah 50:17). Because of what they have done to The Son of God, He has officially cut off His ties with them that only one third or part was saved. Who are these people who are grouped by God into three groups? The people of Israel. The olden people of Israel, considered by God as His own people, were only divided into two divisions or groups - the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah. God allowed this division as a result of their disobedience unto Him. From these two kingdoms of the Jewish people, God has chosen a remnant, a testament of His truthfulness with His Covenant with Abraham.

Who are the people who belong to the saved 'one-third', or third group, and who will save them?

(Isaiah 11:10-12)

10 “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse,

Who shall stand as a banner to the people;

For the Gentiles shall seek Him,

And His resting place shall be glorious.”

11 It shall come to pass in that day

That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time

To recover the remnant of His people who are left,

From Assyria and Egypt,

From Pathros and Cush,

From Elam and Shinar,

From Hamath and the islands of the sea.

12 He will set up a banner for the nations,

And will assemble the outcasts of Israel,

And gather together the dispersed of Judah

From the four corners of the earth.

The parallel prophecy of Joel also confirmed this:

(Joel 2:32)

32  And it shall come to pass

That whoever calls on the name of the Lord

Shall be saved.

For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance,

As the Lord has said,

Among the remnant whom the Lord calls.

The saved one-third is the remnant of God’s people. They were referred to in the prophecy of Isaiah as the outcasts of Israel and the dispersed of Judah, thus proving our earlier point that the first 'two-thirds' or two groups point to the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah. This remnant will be saved, or in prophetic terminology ‘assembled and gathered’, by the prophesied Root of Jess who was set up to be the banner or God’s message of salvation (Isaiah 49:6), which we know was fulfilled in The Christ. On the day that The Lord Jesus was killed and became The Christ or Messiah, the day when He became the banner to the people, the Gentiles will also seek Him to be their light for salvation (Isaiah 49:6) so that, as prophesied by the Prophet Joel, “whoever calls on the name of The Lord shall be saved.”

This is the un-biased presentation of the prophecy in Zechariah 13:8-9 that differs from our brethren in the INC1914 fold.

INC's Other Prophetical Claim Series

(Isaiah 43:7)

7 Everyone who is called by My name,
Whom I have created for My glory;
I have formed him, yes, I have made him.”

The INC1914 cites this particular prophecy to explain why their name is Church of CHRIST. They would explain that the people of God, the same remnant of Israel prophesied will be called by a name CREATED BY GOD for His glory. And then they will link this prophecy to the mention of CHRIST in Acts 2:36 when Apostle Peter stated, "that God has made this Jesus... both Lord and Christ".

This is a very illogical presentation of scriptures. How so? In the prophecy God confirmed that He created a name for His glory that shall be called unto His people. This name could NOT be 'Christ'. Why not? Because the word Christ is from a Greek title 'Christos' which simply means 'the Anointed One' or Messiah. This is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word 'Mashiach', which by the way was already part of the Hebrew language way before The Savior was born.

How did they misrepresent the statement of Peter in Acts 2:36? They make it appear that Peter spoke about the title Christ to be the name created by God to be called unto His people, and thereby justifying their group name Iglesia ni Cristo (MCMXIV) (Filipino) or Church of Christ (MCMXIV). That is a gross misrepresentation of Peter's testimony, is it not? How so? Because in Acts 2:36 Peter DID NOT say that the title Christ is the name created by God, but rather He simply pointed to the fact that God MADE JESUS BOTH LORD AND CHRIST or Messiah. How convenient it is for them to wring the verse out of context in order to fit in their doctrine?

NOTE: Although we do not agree that The Lord's Ekklesia is present on earth and has an official name, however they would have been closer to truth had they used The Christ's GIVEN NAME instead to call their church. As Paul (the self-proclaimed apostle) put it, the NAME JESUS is the Name given to The Savior that is above every name.

If not the title 'Christ' (or Messiah), what then is the name created by God for His people?

(Isaiah 62:2, 12)

The Gentiles shall see your righteousness,

And all kings your glory.

You shall be called by a new name,

Which the mouth of the Lord will name…

12 And they shall call them The Holy People,

The Redeemed of the Lord;

And you shall be called Sought Out,

A City Not Forsaken.

The name to be called unto God's people is a NEW NAME. What is this name? No one else but God and His Son know about this name. How so? It has not been given yet. When will this name be given?

(Revelation 3:12)

12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.

This name will be given in the Kingdom of Heaven to those who overcome. It will be written on the foreheads on those who will make it there:

(Revelation 22:4)

4 They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.

This is the New Name that only those given will ever know:

(Revelation 2:17)

17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”’

How could this New Name be the name of The Christ, as well as of God and His City (Rev. 3:12)? It is because this New Name will be combination of both Titles of God The Everlasting Father and of His Son The Prince of Peace as also prophesied in the 9th chapter of Isaiah:

(Isaiah 9:6)

6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The fact that the INC1914 would resort to taking Acts 2:36 out of context only shows their futile and desperate attempt of providing a scriptural justification of their group's name and existence. But the Gospel Truth prevails that this New Name of God The Everlasting Father and His Son is still unknown by any mortal man in the time being, and will only be revealed in the Kingdom of Heaven.

INC's Other Prophetical Claim Series

(Malachi 4:5-6)

5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet
Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
6 And he will turn
The hearts of the fathers to the children,
And the hearts of the children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

Another prophecy claimed by Felix Manalo is that of being the prophesied Elijah whom God will send before the return of The Savior Yeshua on Judgment Day. We can directly disprove their claim on this prophecy by proving how Felix Manalo DIFFERED IN SPIRIT with the other Elijah whom The Savior himself certified. Whom did The Christ confirm to possess the spirit of Elijah?

(Matthew 11:11-14)

11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.

The one who was sent to prepare the coming of God's Son into the world was John the Baptist (Isa. 40:3 / Mat. 11:9-11). This is unarguable since The Lord himself testified this about John the Baptist. How did Felix Manalo conflict in teaching with John the Baptist? Here is the biggest contradiction between John the Baptist and Felix Manalo of the INC1914.

Who did John the Baptist preach as the One who has the responsibility to do the following tasks that are done DURING HARVEST season, such as: THRESHING and WINNOWING THE CHAFF?

(Luke 3:16-17)

16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”

John the Baptist directly POINTED TO THE CHRIST as being the One who has the WINNOWING fan in His hand who will clean His THRESHING floor, gather the WHEAT and burn the CHAFF. What season is it when one does the work of threshing, winnowing, gathering of the wheat and burning of the chaff? It is of course in the season of harvest - NOT during planting! What prophecy is being fulfilled by this testimony of John the Baptist?

(Isaiah 41:15-16)

15 “Behold, I will make you into a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth;
You shall thresh the mountains and beat them small,
And make the hills like chaff.
16 You shall winnow them, the wind shall carry them away,
And the whirlwind shall scatter them;
You shall rejoice in the Lord,
And glory in the Holy One of Israel.

The prophecy of Isaiah concerning the One who is made as an instrument for harvest to THRESH AND WINNOW THE CHAFF connects with the testimony of John the Baptist that pointed to The Savior as the prophesied Entity.

How could we say that Felix Manalo differed with John the Baptist, the second Elijah who already came (as certified by The Savior)? It is because rather than pointing to The Savior as the One who was prophesied in Isaiah 41 v15-16 to be God's instrument for harvest (and be of the same spirit as John the Baptist), he instead pointed to himself as the prophesied one. And this erroneous claim of prophecies has convinced many people to believe the wrong entity. For when was Felix Manalo ever commissioned TO DO THE WORK OF HARVESTING? Never! After all, who alone has that work and responsibility? Not any one else but The Savior Yeshua alone:

(John 5:22, 26-29)

22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son... 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
