JOHN 10:16 - THE OTHER SHEEP OF THE LORD JESUS

(John 10:16)

16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

This verse is claimed by some religious groups to refer to them being the other sheep of The Lord Jesus Christ. The Latter Day Saints explain this verse to refer to the lost ten tribes of Israel who migrated to the American continent thousands of years ago.

Another notable claim to this statement of The Lord is that of the Iglesia ni Cristo (1914). They believe that they are the other sheep referred in John 10:16, and that the One Shepherd in this verse refers to Felix Y. Manalo. They connect this prophecy with the declaration of Apostle Peter regarding the people “who are afar off” (Acts 2:39) as them who belong to the reemerged Church of Christ from the year 1914. Is the INC1914 correct in their understanding of the ‘other sheep’ of Christ?

Who are the other sheep of The Lord Jesus-Christ?

(Matthew 15:24)

24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

The other sheep of The Christ that He needs to bring and gather is none other than 'the lost sheep of the house of Israel'. Why is there a need for The Savior to gather His other sheep? And how is it proven in prophecy that indeed the other sheep of The Christ belongs to God's nation of Israel? The prophet Jeremiah prophesied about the only people who were likened as the sheep of God:

(Jeremiah 50:17)

17 “Israel is like scattered sheep;

The lions have driven him away.

First the king of Assyria devoured him;

Now at last this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones.”

The prophet Jeremiah prophesied how Israel will be like 'scattered sheep' as a result of foreign invasions. How did God commission The Lord Jesus so that His scattered sheep will be gathered?

(Isaiah 49:5-6)

5 “And now the Lord says,

Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,

To bring Jacob back to Him,

So that Israel is gathered to Him[a]

(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord,

And My God shall be My strength),

6 Indeed He says,

‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant

To raise up the tribes of Jacob,

And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;

I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,

That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

The other sheep of The Lord (referred also as the lost sheep) are the preserved ones of Israel, and the prophesied Servant to gather and restore them is none other than The Christ Jesus. This specific responsibility is enclosed in His general mission of saving the world.

How else are the other sheep or preserved ones of Israel mentioned in prophecy? Another parallel prophecy of Isaiah gave this description:

(Isaiah 11:1, 11-12)

1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,

And a Branch shall grow out of his roots…

11 It shall come to pass in that day

That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time

To recover the remnant of His people who are left,

From Assyria and Egypt,

From Pathros and Cush,

From Elam and Shinar,

From Hamath and the islands of the sea.

12 He will set up a banner for the nations,

And will assemble the outcasts of Israel,

And gather together the dispersed of Judah

From the four corners of the earth.

The other sheep or preserved ones of Israel are the remnants, outcasts or dispersed of Israel and Judah from all around the world! And the one entrusted with this work of gathering them is the prophesied Rod and Branch from Jesse, The Lord Jesus Christ. If so, they are not from any Gentile people, and neither are they from any other country like the Philippines.
