This article is intended to give clarity on one of the claims of the Iglesia ni Cristo (1914) regarding the vision of John in Revelation 7:2-3. They believe the other Angel was fulfilled in Felix Manalo, and the scene of the vision was the First World War. Here’s a disclosure: we do not disagree with their understanding of the meaning of the word angel to be that of God’s messenger. But the INC paradox is that they teach Felix Manalo was an angel of God but does not emphatically teach that The Lord Jesus Christ is also an Angel of God!

What if the The Lord Jesus Christ was prophesied as an Angel of God? What if He is the Angel who has the Seal of the living God, and therefore is the One who leads the task of sealing God’s servants? What if at an appointed time The Christ will come from the east? Would it be enough evidence that He is the envisioned other Angel from the east with the Seal of God as shared by Apostle John in Revelation 7:2-3?

What if all of these hypotheses can be proven from the prophecies and The Christ’s very own declarations? Who is the Angel with the Seal of The Living God envisioned by John?

(Revelation 7:2-3)

2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”

Could this other Angel who ascends or comes from the east be The Christ Jesus? If so, then the claim of Felix Manalo being the fulfillment of the other angel from the east with the seal of God could not be true and the Iglesia ni Cristo’s (1914) foundation crumbles into pieces, further belying their claim of being the only group who has the exclusive right to worship God and be saved.

As the scriptures in the Old Testament "are they which testify of Me" according to The Christ Yeshua (Jn. 5:39), they are filled of prophecies that point to him as God's Messenger, Chosen Servant, Prophet or Son of Man. One overlooked prophecy of Isaiah points to him as the Angel of God's Presence:

(Isaiah 63:8-9)

8 For He said, “Surely they are My people,
Children who will not lie.”
So He became their Savior.
9 In all their affliction He was afflicted,
And the Angel of His Presence saved them;
In His love and in His pity He redeemed them;
And He bore them and carried them
All the days of old.

This Isaiah prophecy spoke how God chose to be the Savior of His people through an Angel of His Presence. This prophesied Angel of God’s Presence will save God’s people out of His love and pity. How could this Angel be The Christ Yeshua? The Christ Himself gives the clarification:

(Jn 14:8-9)

8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

The statement of The Christ Jesus explains the prophecy when He said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father”! That The Christ Jesus is the prophesied Angel of God’s Presence is simply because He is the visible representation of the invisible God. How else could He be the Angel of God’s Presence?

The Angel of God's Presence could not be anyone else but God's own Son. How so? Through Him, the invisible God The Father can be seen! How does the status of The Savior of being an Angel or Messenger differ from all other angels or messengers, may they be celestial or terrestrial? It is only Him who fully represents God and His Divine Will.  What did God vest unto His Son that legitimately made Him His legal representative, or Angel of His Presence?

(John 6:27b)

27 … which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

God has vested unto His Son His very own SEAL. And only The Lord Yeshua possesses the SEAL of The Living God!

What is The Seal of God given unto His Son?

(Matthew 28:18)

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

The Seal of God is His Authority that He vested unto His Son! Some people may argue concerning our understanding on God's Seal being that of His Authority. What makes us certain on the validity of our understanding on this subject? In the olden days, what does the seal of one who is of higher standing reveal or present?

(Esther 8:8)

8 You yourselves write a decreeconcerning the Jews, as you please, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s signet ring; for whatever is written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s signet ring no one can revoke."

In ancient biblical period, due to a lack of methods and efficient ways of communication, the king's signet ring is used to seal any of his royal orders. By virtue of commission, anyone with the seal of the king has the king's official business and authority being his official representative - and so everyone should take him with their highest regard. The same is true with God's Seal that He Himself set on His Son. What is God's divine purpose for doing so? And, how did God's Son make use of God's divine Seal?

(Isaiah 49:6)

6 Indeed He says,
‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

(John 5:22, 26-29)

22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son... 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

The Lord Yeshua has been made GOD'S SALVATION (Isa. 63:8-9 / Isa. 49:6) who will ALSO EXECUTE JUDGMENT (being God's Counsel-Isa.46:11) on behalf of God. Therefore, the ACT OF SEALING that was envisioned by John in Revelation 7:2-3 are the divine tasks of The Savior to SAVE God's servants and to JUDGE those who are not.

The act of sealing by The Savior which is to give a distinction between those who are saved from those who are judged is not a new thing. The same process has been implemented during The Lord's Passover when He saved the first born of Israel from His judgment of Egypt. How was that event in the history of God's early people parallel the task of Sealing by The Messiah on Judgment Day?

(Exodus 12:7, 12-13)

 7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it... 12 ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. 13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

When God judged all the firstborn in Egypt He saved those who have a sign (or marking) on their houses. That sign is the blood of a lamb painted on their doorposts and on their home lintels as commanded. That sign is the seal upon whom God saved and judged the people in the land of Egypt. Prior to God's Final Judgement that will destroy the world and all of mankind, the Seal that will spell out the difference between being saved and being judged is the Authority of God's Son.

How else is the act of saving and judging portrayed in the Bible? How is this pictured by John the Baptist, as well as by the Prophet Isaiah?

(Luke 3:17)

17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”

(Isaiah 41:16)

16 You shall winnow them, the wind shall carry them away,
And the whirlwind shall scatter them;
You shall rejoice in the Lord,
And glory in the Holy One of Israel.

The responsibility of The Lord to save and judge was also likened unto the work of WINNOWING. This is proven by the fact that He has the WINNOWING FAN in His hand! What is the purpose for this work of winnowing? To separate the WHEAT from the CHAFF so that the wheat will be GATHERED while the chaff will be BURNED. Therefore, the act of winnowing is simply a different rendition of the act of sealing - they both represent the tasks of The Christ Yeshua of saving and judging the world on behalf of God (being THE ANGEL of His Presence).

Who else was seen by John in His vision who will be with The Christ who will also be with Him in His task of sealing, also rendered as gathering or saving God's servants?

(Revelation 7:1)

After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree.

Apostle John also saw FOUR ANGELS who stand at the four corners of the earth, as well as FOUR WINDS that can 'BLOW' or cause destruction unto the world. Who are represented by the Four Angels as well as the Four Winds?

(Matthew 13:39-40)

39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.

(Matthew 24:30-31)

30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The angels seen by John in his vision are the Angels who will serve as REAPERS (Matthew 13:39) and GATHERERS (Matthew 24:31) who will act as The Savior's agents in harvesting, another evangelical rendition of sealing people who are saved. The fact that The Lord’s narrative concerning the events that will happen on His coming is the same scene also envisioned by John is further cemented by The Lord’s mention of God’s elect or servants who will be gathered (Mat. 24:31), saved or sealed (Rev. 7:3). This will happen when The Savior is already coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory at the end of age (Mat. 24:3 / 13:39-40).

What about the Four Winds that has the power to cause destruction unto the world? What do they represent?

(John 12:48)

48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

The Four Winds that have the power to destroy the world represent the spoken Word of The Savior that will judge the rest of mankind on the day of judgment. And rightfully so by the fact that God's Son is the very Word of God (Jn. 1:1 / Rev. 19:13) who serves His Divine Will.

How do these facts relate with the prophecy of Isaiah?

(Isaiah 41:15-16)

15 “Behold, I will make you into a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth;
You shall thresh the mountains and beat them small,
And make the hills like chaff.
16 You shall winnow them, the wind shall carry them away,
And the whirlwind shall scatter them;
You shall rejoice in the Lord,
And glory in the Holy One of Israel.

As The Christ Yeshua is the Sower who propagates (Mk 4:14), He is also the one who harvests. In the prophecy, He was also likened to a threshing sledge with sharp teeth. As the thresher is designed to separate the grains from the stalks, so shall The Savior separate God's servants from the rest of the world. He will be the One who 'shall winnow them' so that the WIND or REAPER ANGELS 'shall gather or carry them away'. The WHIRLWIND in the prophecy that 'shall scatter them' represents the spoken Word of The Christ that shall destroy or judge the rest of mankind.

At this point, we have established the following as evangelical facts:

1. That The Savior Yeshua-Christos is the ANGEL OF GOD'S PRESENCE whom God personally vested His own Seal.

2. That The Seal of God is His GOVERNMENT and AUTHORITY to save His servants and to judge the world.

3. That the act of SEALING is the actual act of SAVING and JUDGING.

4. That the other agents who will assist The Savior are the ANGELS as well as His Word.

Therefore, the Angel who possesses the Seal of The Living God seen by John in His vision in Revelation 7:2-3 is none other than The Savior Yeshua.

How about the fact that the other Angel in Revelation 7:2 ascends from the east? Is this also true about The Christ, and if so, when would be the appointed time when He is coming from the east?

(Matthew 24:27)

27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

Based on this pronouncement of The Lord Yeshua, He will be coming from the east on His second coming, in the same way that 'the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west'. But how could He be ‘ascending’ from the east as seen by John in his vision? The same reality applies with the sun as it ascends from the east. Although the sun is stationary in its place, it seems to ascend from the horizon as a result of the earth’s rotation on its axis – the same will be true of The Lord’s return.

How else is it proven that the vision of John in Revelation 7:2-3 is indeed the second coming of The Christ? In the same vision, John has seen the final number of those who are sealed or saved from the children of Israel:

(Revelation 7:4)

4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed…

The very fact that the FINAL NUMBER of the SEALED children of Israel was already seen by John in the vision only proves the CLOSURE of The Lord's work of salvation. How many among the children of Israel were sealed? ONE HUNDRED FORTY-FOUR THOUSAND were sealed.

How could this fact be relevant with The Savior's task of sealing or saving?

(Isaiah 49:6)

6 Indeed He says,
‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

In the prophecy of Isaiah, The Savior Yeshua is the chosen Servant of God to be God's salvation for mankind. However, His PRIMARY TASK is to  raise up and restore the remnant and preserved ones of Israel, a mission that He readily confirmed:

(Matthew 10:6)

6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

But why is The Savior primarily tasked to save the remnant of the house of Israel?

(Zechariah 13:7-9)

7 “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,
Against the Man who is My Companion,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
“Strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered;
Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.
8 And it shall come to pass in all the land,”
Says the Lord,
“That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die,
But one–third shall be left in it:
9 I will bring the one–third through the fire,
Will refine them as silver is refined,
And test them as gold is tested.
They will call on My name,
And I will answer them.
I will say, ‘This is My people’;
And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”

The reason why The Christ has a primary task of saving the remnants of God’s ancient people is because God cut-off His ties with their two groups - the kingdoms of Judah and Israel. Why will this happen? It is because they ‘strike (or kill) the Shepherd’, The Son of God who is considered by God as His Companion. But God purposely left one group from among them as a fulfillment of His Covenant with their forefathers, and this group became the remnant or the ‘the lost sheep of the house of Israel’ (also Isaiah 11:10-12 / 10:20-23 / Jn. 10:16).

Let us now apply, by process of substitution, all of the above-stated biblical facts concerning The Christ with the vision of John in Revelation 7:2:

(Revelation 7:1-3 with evangelical comparison concerning The Lord Jesus Christ)

After these things I saw four angels (Angels as reapers and gatherers-Mat.13:39-40/24:30-31) standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind (spoken Word of Christ-Jn. 12:48) should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel (The Christ being The Angel of God’s Presence-Isa. 63:9 / Jn. 14:8-9) ascending from the east (the return of The Christ – from the east just like lightning-Mat. 24:27), having the seal of the living God (God set His Seal on Christ-Jn. 6:27/Mat. 28:18). And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels (same Wind of destruction and judgment) to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we (Angels as reapers and gatherers) have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”

What SEALS WITH VALIDITY our understanding of John's vision in Revelation 7:1-3 to truly point to the 'End of Age' or 'Second Coming' of The Savior is the verse IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING Revelation 7:1-3 which states:

(Revelation 7:17)

17 For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

To sum it up, the vision of Apostle John in the 7th chapter of Revelation is about the salvation of The Christ on His return. This is not about the First World War and Felix Manalo's preaching of the gospel as claimed by the Iglesia ni Cristo (MCMXIV).

The Lord Jesus Christ is undeniably the envisioned OTHER ANGEL in Revelation 7:2-3 since He is the only ANGEL (or Messenger/Representative) WITH THE SEAL OF GOD (Isaiah 63:9; John 6:27) who will come from the EAST (Mat 24:27) on His second coming.

If you are an Iglesia ni Cristo (1914), would you still continue to believe in a blasphemy? Your belief in Felix Manalo being the other Angel envisioned by John in Revelation 7:2-3 is simply based on a mere claim, as he did with other Messianic prophecies in Isaiah 41:9-1 / 46:11 / 43:5-6.

May the truth of Christ illumine the understanding of those who truly seek Him, so that no one’s worship and love for God and Christ be in vain.

(Matthew 15:9)

9 And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
