(Revelation 12:1-2, 5, 13-17)

Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. 2 Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth… 5 She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne… 13 Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child. 14 But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15 So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

This is one of Apostle John’s vision recorded in the book of Revelation. The key characters and element in his vision were the Woman, the serpent, and the flood that became of the water spewed by the serpent. We will explain in this study those characters and element.

It is a common opinion among different religious groups that the Woman represents Mary the mother of The Lord Yeshua. It would be convenient for Catholics to argue that this is a proof that Mary has already ascended to heaven. A good many others would point to the church to be the Woman as the church has been described by Paul as a bride. And without any doubt, the serpent represents satan or the devil while the Child referred to The Lord Yeshua, The Son of God.

Although Mary was the earthly mother of The Lord, she could not be the Woman in this vision of John. How could she not be the envisioned Woman? Because she was not given wings of an eagle nor did she fly into the wilderness. This envisioned Woman could not be the church either as claimed by other preachers like the Iglesia ni Cristo (1914), simply because the church did not give birth to the envisioned male Child, God's Son Yeshua-Christos. The Woman envisioned is not a literal woman in the same sense as the serpent or dragon is not a literal one. They are both metaphors who represent something else.

Who is the Woman who also brought forth or bore God’s Son, Yeshua The Christ? His Spiritual Mother who bore Him as Her Seed, the same Woman first prophesied by God in Genesis:

(Genesis 3:15)

15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

What should we understand about the Woman who bore God's Son? This Woman is not Mary who bore God's Son during his HUMAN CONCEPTION AND BIRTH, but rather the Spiritual Mother or Origin who bore God's Son in his SPIRITUAL BIRTH. Thus, in order to understand who is the Spiritual Origin we first need to understand the Spiritual Birth of God's Son. How was the Spiritual Conception and Birth of God's Son and when did it occur in the spectrum of time?

(Psalm 2:7)

7 “I will declare the decree:
The Lord has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.

There was a day when God brought forth His Son through His DIVINE WILL. How did God's Son originate?

(Micah 5:2)

2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.”

(John 1:1)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The ‘goings forth’ or origin of God’s Son (who was also the prophesied Ruler in Israel) was God’s Word. He was conceived when God WILLED to have a Son. In other words, the day when God brought forth His Son simply points to the time when God DESIGNATED His Word to become His Son. Thus, the very Word of God was the origin or source of God’s Son. If so, She was the Spiritual Mother of God’s Son, the same Child envisioned by John in the 6th Chapter of Revelation. But please understand that the Mother-Child relationship of God's Son with His source or origin during the Spiritual Birth is not of the same concept as to a human mother-child relationship.

There is no doubt that the serpent or dragon metaphorically refers to the devil or satan:

(Revelation 20:2)

2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years…

If the serpent is the devil, what represents the water that he spewed from his mouth that became flood intended to drown the woman? In order to get the answer, we need to do a parallel study with a  couple of evangelical mention of water both witnessed by Apostle John:

(John 7:38)

38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

When The Lord mentioned about rivers flowing with the living water He was referring to His words (Jn. 6:63/ 7:39). How else was water metaphorically mentioned by John to point to words or languages:

(Revelation 17:15)

15 Then he said to me, “The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.

In another vision of John concerning the evil woman who sits on many waters, the water was also used as a metaphor for tongues, languages or spoken words. In the same context, the water that the devil spewed that became a flood also refers to his words. And because He is the devil, his words posses a very different character when compared with the words of The Christ. Whereas the words of The Lord are truth, the devil’s words are nothing but lies. After all he is the father of all lies:

(John 8:44)

44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

Therefore, the water that the devil spewed that became flood are the teachings that he sowed into the world in his aim to overshadow the truth of the Word of God (Jn. 17:17). The same is very true with Christianity today. The devil did not completely reject the DIVINE WILL of God spoken through His Son, he simply made some revisions to it. Slight revisions yet continuous ensuring a disconnect of man from the guaranteed salvation and eternal. He was so tricky that he even was able to embed his alterations of the Message or Gospel of The Christ within the Holy Book. And his alterations have truly created a different image of The Son of God - the image that is of the anti-Christ that has engulfed many of The Lord's believers. However, was he successful in drowning the Woman or the Word of God? He was not, for God made the earth to swallow the flood so that in the end God's truth in His Son is preserved until the appointed time for its DISCOVERY.

There is then a need to recalibrate our bases of our faith to ensure that we only adhere unto the words and teachings of The Christ Yeshua, for only His words can spring up to become fountains of living water for eternal life:

(John 4:13-14)

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
